The first step in planing an effective web page is to decide the purpose your page will serve.
Some web pages are filled with wonderful animation, impressive Java applets, brilliant color, eye catching graphics, take forever to load, and leave you wondering what they were all about. This is great if your main goal is to entertain your viewers; but, if you are trying to sell a product or provide information you may have failed.
Many viewers will only spend a few seconds waiting for a web page to load. For maximum effectiveness you must communicate your purpose as clearly and rapidly as possible.
Next, you must present your information as briefly as possible.
There are more web sites on the internet than any individual could view in ten lifetimes and thousands of new pages are placed online every day. Viewers will not waste time wading through facts they do not want looking for jewels of information that may be buried in your text.
The text on your site should be presented in short tightly written paragraphs that are not only interesting but informative. Additional links may be used to present more in depth information for those who want it but, do not risk boring readers with too much detail in any one place.
Finally, topics within your web site must be well organized and easy to located.
Once you have caught the attention of a viewer you do not want them to wander in circles trying to find specific information. Links and internal organization are roads to your product. Your final product can be no better than your original plan. The simplest way to begin is with a brief outline of the information or services you wish to provide. Your web designer can help you turn your plan into reality but cannot read your mind. Your input is critical!
